FRIDAY, NOV. 18: Walter Roban might have been guilty of bad timing and poor judgement — but he did nothing illegal, a senior PLP insider intimated today.

Mr Roban resigned on Thursday night after he allowed planning appeals by fellow Ministers Zane DeSilva and Wayne Furbert just before he left the Ministry of the Environment around two weeks ago. The decisions prompted heavy criticism from environmentalists, among others.

The planning row drew heavy media attention and Mr Roban said that he was resigning for the good of the party.

A PLP insider told us: “The facts of this were misrepresented — but, although there was nothing illegal here, there is such a thing as bad timing and bad judgement.”

Community Development Minister Michael Weeks is to take over Mr Roban’s Public Works slot, in the second shuffle carried out by Premier Paula Cox this month.

Ms Cox said Mr Weeks’ portfolio would go to Patrice Minors, the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, with the exception of charities.

They will become the responsibility of Michael Scott, the former Attorney General, now Minister of Government Estates and Information Services.

Public Works includes Government’s Works & Engineering Department, parks, the Bermuda Housing Corporation and the Bermuda Land Development Company.[[In-content Ad]]
