Ready to wash some pots?
WEDNESDAY, JAN. 18: Pot-washing jobs are going to be up for grabs — but who’ll take them?
The average pot-washer in the hospitality industry makes $32,090 — or roughly $16 an hour — according to the 2010 Employment Survey. House cleaners fare worse, making an average of $28,714 or $14.73 an hour.
Government is scrapping work permits for certain jobs like pot-washing and cleaning, in a bid to create openings for Bermudians.
There are more than 100 non-Bermudians in the hospitality industry affected by the moratorium.
Comments on Facebook and the talk shows have decried the going rates as too low for Bermudians.
Restaurateur Phillip Barnett, of the Bermuda Chamber of Commerce, said: “There’s nowhere in the world that pays pot-washers an hourly rate higher than Bermuda.
“We would love to pay our pot-washers $100,000 a year… but until people come in looking for $12 and $13 hamburgers are willing to pay $100 for a hamburger, the economics would not work.”
The Bermuda Sun bids farewell...
JUL 30, 2014: It marked the end of an era as our printers and collators produced the very last edition of the Bermuda Sun.
