'Prince' backs Moore to take national team to the top
Double world record holder Brian Lara believes David Moore can take local cricket to the next level — but he reckons the Aussie cannot do the job alone.
Lara said: “You can have a very good guy there but systems are more important.
“You can put an average guy in a great system and he is going to work pretty well. You can also put a good guy in a bad set-up and it’s not much he can do.
“My good friend David Moore from Australia is there and I’ve worked with him with the West Indies team.
“He is very dedicated and has a lot of great ideas but you need to have a programme and have a five or 10-year plan in place to get the desired results. It’s an effort that has to come from all the stakeholders.”
Like many, Lara had high expectations for Bermuda cricket after we qualified for the 2007 ICC World Cup in the Caribbean.
Achievement
But since that historical achievement the senior national team has fallen on hard times on the international stage, surrendering its one-day international (ODI) status in the process.
Lara said: “Obviously if your cricket has gone down since World Cup 2007 then it means a plan was not in place — and that shouldn’t have happened.
“I hope someone is doing something about it because I would love to see Bermuda play good cricket and play the best teams in the world. It’s a great place to be in and I wish them well.”
Lara bowed out of international cricket at the 2007 World Cup in the Caribbean, against an England side he plundered a record 375 and 400 not out against in 1994 and 2004.
During his career, the ‘Prince’ amassed 11,953 runs in Test cricket at an average of 52.88 and another 10,405 runs in ODIs with an average of 40.48.
