The PLP's 41st Annual Delegates Conference went off without a hitch in spite of pre-conference media reports of a possible coup against the Premier.

There was no hint of a challenge to the leadership of Bermuda's oldest political party and in fact delegates and party members showed their overwhelming support for party leader Dr. Ewart Brown throughout the three-day conference.

At the opening of the conference at the Berkeley Institute last Wednesday evening, Dr. Brown delivered a stirring address that brought attendees to their feet on more than one occasion.

Confronting the elephants in the room, Dr. Brown assured the attendees that he would continue to work tirelessly on behalf of the Progressive Labour Party and the people of Bermuda.

He also blasted the media for their continued attacks on him and the party, particularly during the last several weeks leading up to the conference.

"To the media who have glorified in whatever dissension they can find and create in the party with regard to my leadership, I say to you: Write what you will. This grand and venerable Progressive Labour Party will never, ever allow you to dictate our agenda or set our course.

"I will continue to work tirelessly on behalf of the Progressive Labour Party and the people of Bermuda," Dr. Brown said.

The highlight of the evening for many was the introduction of several Bermudian entrepreneurs who have been empowered by the PLP Government, which countered the rumour that the PLP Government had done nothing to empower the ordinary Bermudian.

Members once again rose to their feet as young and not so young, mostly male Bermudians boasted about their ventures into the Bermuda business world.

"What I promised was that I would lead a government dedicated to the empowerment of the many and not the few," asserted Dr. Brown.

"I promised that we would implement the changes necessary to make Bermuda a place it has never been before for so many of our people - where our children will be able to rise as high as their vision and their wings will take them.

"I promised you that I would not be afraid of the poisoned pens and whispers that would befall us as we forge ahead asking for the things that rightfully belong to all of the people - a candid reflection on our history, and a shared stake in our future."

Thursday evening heard reports from the party's secretary general, treasurer and party leader. The highlight of those reports was the announcement by the treasurer and party leader that the mortgage on Alaska Hall had been paid in full due to the combined efforts of MP Zane DeSilva, chair of the building fund committee, and Dr. Brown, through his annual Premier's Gala that was held earlier in the year.

According to Dr. Brown, the Progressive Labour Party is now the proud, free and clear owner of Alaska Hall.

On Friday evening, after the election of six standing members of the Central Committee and the assistant organizer for the eastern district, an outstanding panel of five was assembled to address the theme 'It Takes a Village to Raise a Child'.

PLP delegates and members heard from Dr. Wendy Woods, Reverend Lanel Guyton, chief inspector Anthony Mouchette, Dr. Shangri-La Durham-Thompson and Minister Dale Butler, all of whom offered their solutions and suggestions for combating the apathy of young people in our community.[[In-content Ad]]
