PLP politicians in second stand-off for constituency
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 30: Two Government politicians are to face a rematch in the fight for Constituency 18.
Incumbent MP Neletha Butterfield and Senator David Burt will face the polls a second time in the PLP’s (Progressive Labour Party) candidate selection process.
Controversy
The contest to represent Pembroke West Central ended in controversy last Thursday night (September 22) amid claims Ms Butterfield’s 17-year-old grandson took part in the vote — contrary to party rules.
The first count had produced a 35-35 tie, but the recount favoured Ms Butterfield, by 35-34.
Ms Butterfield, Minister of Public Information Services, has represented the constituency for Government since 1998.
Mr Burt, Junior Minister for Finance and Chief of Staff to Premier Paula Cox, is the challenger.
A party spokesman said last night: "The Progressive Labour Party announces that there will be a second Candidate Selection Meeting for Constituency 18, Pembroke West Central.
“This meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 12 at The Berkeley Institute.”
