Shaping up for Jesus: Month 3
Passion to perfect the pecs leads to a lunch resurrection
FRIDAY, AUGUST 19: We men can often experience some form of ‘testosterone buzz’ in certain situations.
It often happens after watching an action movie or playing a physically demanding sport.
Euphoria
We feel an energy rise in our stomachs, our confidence builds, our inhibitions drop, and suddenly we want to leap over cars, run across roofs and roar at the moon (in a cape, preferably).
It turns out that I also acquire this buzz after I throw up.
As I entered my penultimate month of training for the title role in the Gilbert & Sullivan Society’s October production of Jesus Christ Superstar, I was feeling more pressure to achieve my goals of shedding the fat and toning the muscle.
I therefore tried reducing the time between my reps (repetitions) on the weight machines, to keep my heart rate up so I would be burning fat and building muscle at the same time.
I had a tough but fantastic workout… after which I lost my lunch.
What is most unusual about this episode is the sense of euphoria that followed. I felt amazing!
My body was tingling with masculine fire after working myself so hard.
With the Power of Grayskull in my veins, I strutted back to work and proudly announced to my colleagues all that had just happened, totally oblivious to the fact that nobody really wanted to know the details.
A word of advice: exercise caution if the macho zing ever takes you.
Personal trainer
‘Retched’ business aside, I really did want to push myself further. Rehearsals for Superstar are imminent and the loincloth beckons.
To help me with my goals Scott Stallard of The Olympic Club introduced me to personal trainer Dr Don Peden. He advised me on nutrition and on increasing the intensity of my workouts, and offered to train me.
My introduction to the gym lifestyle has suited me well. Scott has provided me with a simple and accessible structure of diet and exercise, with an emphasis on safety – protecting the body whilst developing it.
This has been a good foundation for Don’s regimes, which are more intense and targeted.
He has also outlined a healthier diet regime.
In a month’s time I will be well into rehearsals.
You folks are going to have the chance to judge whether I have achieved a body that will match up to the ancient and iconic images of Christ.
And please remember you can send messages of encouragement or even sponsor my efforts at [email protected].
All funds go to the Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Bermuda charity.
