Owen's injury puts damper on England's group victory

England are set for a noon showdown with Ecuador in round two of the World Cup on Sunday after avoiding a nightmare clash with old foe Germany.

But the English will almost certainly be without striker Michael Owen who was stretchered off in last night's 2-2 draw with Sweden after twisting his knee in the second minute.

The Newcastle centre-forward could even miss the rest of the World Cup, England boss Sven Goran Eriksson said last night.

His team survived without him thanks to a wonder-goal from Joe Cole and a header from Steven Gerrard, his second of the tournament.

Fit-again Wayne Rooney got through 60 minutes and is expected to partner Peter Crouch in attack against the Ecuadorians in Stuttgart.

The game kicks off at 5pm in Germany meaning a lunch-time start here in Bermuda.

If Portugal seal top spot in Group D this morning then they will be involved in the second game on Sunday in a double-header that is sure to fill the island's bars to the rafters.

The Portuguese, who are already through, play Mexico today and will face either Argentina or Holland in round two.

Hosts Germany play Sweden in Munich at 5pm on Saturday (midday, local time) as the second round begins to take shape.

The in-form Germans trounced Ecuador 3-0 yesterday morning, though both teams had already progressed to round two.

The remaining group games will be played out over the next three days before the knock-out phase begins on Saturday.[[In-content Ad]]
