Olympic medallists coming to BDA
Argentina's field hockey team will be the highlight of the Pan American Cup tournament, which will be held in Bermuda at the National Centre in February.
Argentina defeated 2004 gold medalist Germany 3-1 for third place in this year's Olympics last Friday.
Argentina also won bronze in Athens and gold in Sydney and will display some of the finest field hockey ever seen in Bermuda When the tournament commences.
Bermuda Hockey Federation vice president Liz Hartley said the BHF "Congratulates the Argentinian women's hockey team on winning the Olympic bronze medal. This is yet another great achievement by an incredible team.
"We're really looking forward to seeing their amazing talents firsthand and see them play some fantastic team hockey here in Bermuda - It should be very exciting."
Hartley added: "The Pan Am Cup really is an incredible opportunity for Bermuda to witness top level international hockey. It's going to be particularly exciting having the likes of world class teams such as Argentina and the USA coming to Bermuda fresh off their Beijing Olympic campaigns."
Besides its outstanding Olympic record, Argentina has also done well at international competetions winning the world championships in Perth, Australia in 2002 and finishing third in Madrid, Spain in 2006 at the world championships.
They are led by four-time World Hockey Player of the Year Luciana Aymar, who received her 250th international cap in the bronze medal match with Germany.
But she's not a one-woman band as captain Magdalena Aicega earned her 300th cap in the same match and the squad has promising young talent in Carla Rebecchi and Rosario Luchetti.
The Argentinians will be over-whelming favourites as they have won every Pan Am championships since 1987.
The U.S. will be favoured to take silver after finishing eighth in Beijing in spite of being seeded 11th.
Netherlands Antilles will also be a medal contender after winning bronze at the last Pan Am championships.
