Dear Sir,

It is most refreshing to see Wayne Furbert elevated to leader of the United Bermuda Party. Here comes a sincere, genuine and enthusiastic politician who says what he means and means what he says.

There is no doubt that he glows with magnetism, which others cannot duplicate or even imitate.

Now is the time when 'equality' will mean something. Now is the time that blacks and whites should be inspired to support a man who has gained recognition from the UBP caucus to take the party to the polls. Now is certainly NOT the time to say we will wait awhile to see how Wayne performs.

Now is the time for solidarity especially from the general membership of the UBP and those have become disillusioned with the PLP This is the sort of individual who can cause a change in race relations — an issue that has divided the country for far too long. There was a time when I thought the only way for racial barriers to be overcome was with at least four or five white men or women making a major impact by joining the Progress Labour Party.

If they were accepted then there was a possibility that 'race' would have come off the table in political discussions.

The talk of independence has without doubt created additional tension within the community. We want to see adequate housing, better care for seniors and many other pressing problems dealt with.

Mr. Wayne Furbert is the person who can get it done.

I’ve listened to a number of people who think Wayne Furbert was elevated to leader of the UBP because he is black. I wonder if those same callers might consider that he may have been selected not by the color of his skin but for his distinct, genuine approach to leading this country forward?
