WEDNESDAY, MAR. 21: Three years after first breaking ground, Bermuda Public Storage is celebrating its official opening this afternoon.

Michael Weeks, Minister of Public Works, cut the ribbon at the entrance of the building, joined by former Premier Sir John Swan.

Both praised the tenacity and vision of entrepreneur Troy Burrows in bringing the eight-storey storage facility to fruition.

Mr Weeks, a friend of Mr Burrows since the days they both attended Howard University in the 1980’s, said: “Come hell of high water he was going to get this done. I want to tell him how proud I am of him.

“This achievement is a testament to fortitude. Along the way he had a lot of obstacles but he really persevered.

“Troy has always been a community man and he was looking to do something that would benefit the community.

Sir John said: “He took on a project which was far beyond what many corporations or institutions have taken on in Bermuda. This is a big building. He really put his heart into it.

“It’s something its users will find useful, very secure, and they know very well they will get the service they need.”

He told Mr Burrows: “I want to congratulate you on your perseverance. It’s not only been a long journey but a difficult journey. Congratulations on a job well done.”

Bishop Vernon George Lambe Sr of the First Church of God North Shore said Mr Burrows’ project was among the most impressive he had seen in the past few decades.

“The purpose you had in building this structure was a service to the community, and therefore it is appropriate that it is now known as Bermuda Public Storage. This structure is for public good.

“Nothing has brought me greater joy than to join you today in the dedication of this building.”

Mr Burrows thanked his family, friends and HSBC Bank Bermuda for their support.

“It’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever done but it came out pretty good,” he said.

“I’m just relieved that we got to this point.”

Bermuda Public Storage offers access to 500 storage units of varying sizes in a climate-controlled, dust and damp-free environment.

Clients can back up vehicles and containers right up to the 5,000 lb elevators, and the loading dock is situated in a covered entrance, away from the elements.

Since its soft opening in November, the facility on Elliott Street has already filled half of its 500 units.
