New environment and climate fund to help protect UK Overseas Territories
MONDAY, NOV. 5: The UK Government has announced the creation of a new environment and climate fund to help protect and preserve the environmental assets of UK Overseas Territories.
The new fund brings together existing UK Government funding from the Department for International Development, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Department for Environment. The new Fund will be called Darwin Plus and is intended to disburse around £2 million per year to environmental and conservation projects in the UK Overseas Territories.
The Minister for Overseas Territories, Mr Mark Simmonds, said:
“ This is an excellent example of how we are meeting our White Papers commitment to provide co-ordinated Government support to the Overseas Territories and a signal of how important we consider the environments of the Overseas Territories to be. I have high hopes that this Fund will lead to many innovative and creative projects which will result in better sustainable environmental management in the Overseas Territories.”
Organisations can bid for funds now and all bids must be received by the Deputy Governor’s Office by 31 December. Further information and application forms can be found at on the Defra website or by contacting the Deputy Governor’s Office.
