My government has been weak in its response to gang violence

The brother of a previous gunshot victim is riddled with bullets, having been targeted in the same area around the same time in the wee hours of the night.

If the gunmen know when police change shifts, the police need to switch their schedule at night. I never went to police academy, but that's not a tough one to figure out.

And no, the police can't do it all and it's time for Bermudians to do what's right. I'm glad to hear arrests have been made but as this column went to press, no charges had been laid.

You want to talk to me about hoodies and tasers, I want to talk about why ineffective police are still getting paid!

I'm glad to hear Bermudians are finally speaking up and pointing fingers. But the children who live in the St. Monica's Mission Road area are being forced to live under siege. Are the taxes 42nd Street area residents pay for protection worthless? They don't want glory seeking marches - they want their lives back - they want results!

I don't believe no one knows who's making the money from guns in Bermuda, I don't believe no one knows who's financing the illegal drugs. I do know shipments of drugs come fully loaded with them. And I know the places to run are running out.

If you need help finding the source, track the cash. What's done in the dark always comes to light.

From where I sit my Government looks weak. Yes I'm a PLP member and I said it.

It's our black boys getting shot at, gunned down in the streets like they're trash. It's our black boys shooting each other. I'm sick of it. I want to know what Rolfe and the Big Conversations are doing about it.

While we're talking, this new breed criminal couldn't care less. Yes, they have mothers who love them - they even have mothers who believe they deserve the cash they 'earn'.

This new breed is coming fast and furious, trust me you ain't seen nothing yet. They're obsessed with that cash and they're packing guns ready to kill.

Right behind this new breed of criminal there's a new set of would-be middle school wannabe thugsters who by the way are quite popular with the girls. These soon-to-be-men couldn't care less about authority. Getting an education is of no use in their minds. Why go to school when you can make all that money on the street? They don't hear what mamma says and to most it doesn't matter where their fathers sleep at night.

That cash in their pockets buys loyalty - some even think it buys love. On the one hand we have a global economic downturn, on the other, our illegal drug trade is flourishing.

There's no more time for excuses and pointing fingers.

We're stuck right now arguing over FutureCare well guess what - this country's future is way up in the air and clouded by fear. How are we as a people prepared to deal with it? Can we even stand up as one in the name of country? Or are we still stuck along party lines?

It's pointless nurturing our offshore international business market, or dreaming of boosting tourism, or telling me gambling's the only thing that will save us, if ultimately all we're doing is dodging bullets.

Revenue won't matter if no one's left standing.
