The pair will represent Bermuda for the first time in the show jumping ring internationally and are hoping to ride well enough to bring home the much alluded blue ribbon that has escaped the Bermuda team for five years now!
The CEA competition sees the likes of Antigua, Barbados, Cayman, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and Bermuda compete in a junior jumping competition over the course of the year. Three teams travel to the islands according to their rotation for the year and are represented by two riders, a 14 years and under rider and 16 years and under rider.
Smith and Moniz will compete in the two age groups respectively. The girls will ride a series of local horses from Jamaica that they would've never ridden prior to the competition and will only have five minutes to get used to on competition day. This will no doubt test their ability, skill, and resilience!
Smith has been riding for six years and rides out of Inwood Stable under the tutelage of veteran coach Nick DeCosta.
Moniz who is Bermudian, however resides in Georgia, has been riding since the age of five and is coached by Darren Graziano of DG Ventures, Wellington, Florida and Bill Lowry of Winsor Farm Sales in Rhode Island. Moniz competes in the Children's Jumpers on various horses selected by her trainers. Michael Rodrigues will be the travelling coach for the girls. The BEF wishes both riders much success in Jamaica.
Keisha Smith is the public relations officer for the Bermuda Equestrian Federation.
