Mitchell aims for National Championships double

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 20: Dominic Mayho and Nicole Mitchell will be seeking to add the Bank of Bermuda Foundation Road Race National Championship title to the Time Trial crowns they won on Sunday at Southside.

Mayho beat Mark Hatherley by 1:52 for the men’s title while Mitchell beat Kristyn Robinson 1:34.

Other winners included Darren Glasford (Male B), Karen Smith (Female Masters), Daniel Oatley (Male Junior) and Gabriella Arnold (Female Junior).

Mitchell will be having to win the title without support from our Winner’s Edge teammates Karen Bordage and Karen Smith. Bordage is injured and is unable to compete while Smith will be overseas participating in a triathlon.

That leaves her fending for herself against the strong Bicycle Works team which has star Robinson but also Laurie Orchard and against Team Madison which has Sinclair Packwood Memorial Race winner Joanna Shillington.

Mitchell said it was “great” to win the time trial on Sunday and she is now looking for the double.

“Normally, I compete against the men so this will be different, but I learned a lot form May 24th.”

Mitchell saw how team tactics worked in that race and “I’ll certainly be more aware of what the other teams are doing” in Sunday’s National Road Race championships.”

Mitchell is constantly striving to improve her skills and recently competed in the Killington Stage Race in Vermont.

She said: “I’m also building for Cascade Classic at the end of July where I’ll be racing as a guest rider for FCS/Rouse. It’s great opportunity for me to race overseas in some very experienced women’s fields.”
