Talented young seam bowler Greg Maybury aims to force his way into Leicestershire's academy set-up when he returns to England next month.

The 16-year-old is hoping for a Cup Match call-up from Somerset next week.

But he admits his main goal, at least for this season, is to further his professional ambitions in the English county scene.

Maybury took two wickets and scored 41 on debut for Leicestershire's Under-16s against a Welsh youth side last month.

And he will be looking to make an even better impression when he returns to play against Northants in August and in a 20-20 competition later that month.

"I'm hoping to do well enough to get into the academy squad. That's the fast-track to the county team," said Maybury, who was spotted by Leicestershire scouts playing for Oakham school.

One of his former school team-mates Joshua Cobb has already gone on to play for Leicestershire as well as England Under-19s and scored a double century against Bangladesh last week.

Of his Under-16 debut, Maybury said: "I felt the pressure to impress and luckily I pulled it off.

"I was just determined to put in a good show in my first game and make sure they invited me back."

Maybury who flew back to Bermuda to be part of the Under-19 national squad's trip to Canada for the Americas tournament said he was disappointed that Bermuda had not done better in that competition.

The Under-19s finished third after losing to the U.S. and then missing out to Canada after a tornado hit their final game.

"That hurt me a lot. I really was looking to go back to the World Cup and I felt we could have beaten Canada if it wasn't for the weather.

"We've got a good young squad and hopefully we can do better next time," he added.

Maybury's name has been mentioned as a potential colt for Somerset in this season's Cup Match.

But despite the accolades he is keeping his feet on the ground.

"I'm not really worrying about it. It's a great tradition and I'd love to be picked but I have played a lot of cricket this summer.

"Somerset has a lot of good young players and I'm just trying to play my best cricket. If I make it, great, if I don't then I've just got to keep working."

Maybury added that he was enjoying the opportunity to test himself in England, and believes several of his contempories could play at the same level.

"There are quite a few players in the Under-19s that could get into the English set-up. I've been the lucky one because I have been given this opportunity and I have to try and make the most of it."

He added his thanks to the Bank of Bermuda Foundation and the BCB for funding his scholarship to Oakham School.[[In-content Ad]]
