Manders: Difficult to swallow being relegated
By Don Burgess
It was a bittersweet Davis Cup tournament for Gavin Manders. He won two matches, becoming the first Bermudian to do so at the Group 3 level, but Bermuda was relegated.
Manders said the difference between staying up or going down was a “fine line”.
He added: “We were just two doubles matches away from staying in Group 3. It was a bit of a heartbreaker for me. Winning those two matches and being the first (Bermudian) to do so is something great, but when you’re two doubles matches from staying in Group 3…it was quite difficult to swallow.”
Manders said it “was amazing” when he won his first match “especially considering it was a two and a half hour three setter. I didn’t have much time to really think about it as I only had a half hour to get ready for the doubles. I was trying to keep my mind on winning the doubles so I couldn’t really dwell on it.”
The team captain said Bermuda should be able to move back up again next year as long as everyone takes their training seriously.
“We weren’t far off staying up,” Manders said. “It’s always a fine line so if we do what we’re supposed to do, I can’t see why not we can’t go right back up to three. n
