Failure is not an option for expert motocross rider Zico Majors who stepped up his championship bid during New Year’s Day racing at Southside.
The 25-year-old construction worker produced three podium finishes (two firsts and a second) to capture bragging rights in his respective class.
Last weekend’s dominant performance was a breakthrough for Majors who is returning to the sport following a one-year hiatus.
His bike suffered massive mechanical damage in 2009, forcing him to put his career on hold and dig deep into his own pockets to rebuild his engine.
But now Majors is back and hungrier than ever to be number one.
He declared: “I’m trying to win the championship but I don’t like how Aaron (Cannonier) has that number one plate.
“I don’t like that and so I’m trying to take that from him and I think I will end up beating him.
“I’m excited to be back racing because I love it. ”
Majors reckons there’s room for improvement.
He said: “I’m probably about 85 percent at the moment and just need a bit more training. I need about another month and a half to two months and then I think I will be back fully. Another month or two and I will be unstoppable.”
The expert rider downplayed last weekend’s dominant display at the East End race track.
He said: “It was alright, but it wasn’t my best. I had new tires and I trained harder and it paid off.”
Cannonier, who dominated proceedings during the Boxing Day Classic, had to settle for second best this time around.
Still, he proved to be a thorn in Majors’ side.
“Cannonier rode nice, he kind of surprised me,” added Majors. “He definitely surprised me.”
Jamal Pitcher (over 30s), Dale Boorman (novice), Rajul Mathie-Shakir (85cc 12-15), Jayden Ming (65cc 9-11), Kaijun Simons (65cc 7-9), Logan Jones (50cc 7-9) and Keon Glasford (pee wee) were last Saturday’s remaining class winners.
Danniel Tamia Fubler, Bermuda Motocross Club (BMC) secretary said: “The riders were all hungry and eager to ride, and it was some nice, competitive and exciting racing. All the riders adjusted quite well to the new race track.
“ It’s a safe track and fairly easy for everybody. We have to keep the kids in mind first and foremost because we have more kids than we do the bigger riders — and everybody adjusted quite well.”
