Straight off the bat / A player's perspective
Loss was a good result
Even though we lost to the West Indies High Performance team on Wednesday, this was an excellent result for us against a higher level of competition. Some of their players are on the verge of playing test cricket.
To be in a 30 overs match and bowl them out for 171 was an excellent effort. It was a tremendous effort by our bowlers to knock them down for a very low score.
We would have expected our batsmen to win this game, but it takes a higher level of discipline.
It shows it’s a lot easier to make runs in Bermuda, because they struggled a little bit, but being exposed to this high level of cricket can only benefit them.
Guys like Dion Stovell and Jason Anderson are being exposed to this for the first time. They are quality enough to bounce back the next time.
We’ll be kicking ourselves that we didn’t win to get some momentum, but it’s still a great start. It shows we are not that far off from winning.
The boys can hold their heads up for what they did.
David Hemp gave a true captain’s innings. It was brilliant and it shows he still has the ability to score runs at the highest level. It was another positive from the match. He leads from the front.
Malachi proved he’s our main strike bowler. When he’s in the team he brings pace and energy. He’s rejuvenated since he was disciplined.
That’s probably a blessing in disguise that he did. Sometimes in life people need that wake up call and he’s taking advantage of that second chance.
He knows he has t0 lead the bowling attack and he’s bowling with a lot of fire. He’s still young, but his bowling has become very thoughtful.
Bermuda has been lacking a death bowler the last couple of years. We’ve been missing one since Saleem Mukuddem. To have someone who can bowl at the death is another positive.
I have a lot of respect for coach David Moore’s discipline system. He lets you know right up front what he expects so there’s no surprises when you run afoul of his rules — you know you’re going to get it.
He’s a very disciplined coach. If you don’t want to be a part of it, you can step aside, but if you do, here are the rules and the guidelines. I really like this. He didn’t wait until things happened to make up his rules as he went along.
Twenty20
We’ve probably had more 100s scored in Twenty20 cricket in the 50 Overs League. That shows the bowlers need to think more in critical situations.
There’s no way players in Bermuda should be scoring 100s in Twenty20 cricket unless there’s a dropped catch.
The bats are dominating the bowling right now, but as the tournament goes on we’ll see scores closer to 160 and 170 rather than the 200s.
This weekend is big. If teams win they can secure a place in the semi-final or a loss can send them crashing out.
We have Willow Cuts and Warwick. Willow Cuts are also undefeated so this is a big, big match. We want to maintain our unbeaten record since we started two years ago.
Good things will have to come to end some time, we just don’t want it to be this weekend. This is a good team to test ourselves against. I’m sure they are looking forward to playing against us too because everyone wants to play the champions and everyone wants to beat the best.
We always have to be up for every challenge.
OJ Pitcher has been bowling well for us and been all-around consistent, but everybody has been chipping in. Guys are stepping up at the right time.
