Loss of focus dooms Bermuda

Coach Logie admits batsmen panicked in crucial loss to U.S.

Frustrated Bermuda coach Gus Logie said his side had been guilty of losing focus in their 80 run defeat against the U.S.

The coach said Bermuda played 'only 60 per cent' of the game and had failed to take advantage of good positions in both innings.

First they had the Americans on the rack at 129 for 5 after 35 overs. But they let them off the hook as the tailenders smashed the ball around the park to blast 130 from the final 15 overs - a rate of more than eight an over,

Then the batsmen put themselves in a strong position at 102 for 2 in the run chase. But it all fell apart again as a flurry of wickets curbed the progress and left them well short of their victory target.

"The guys are disappointed because they did not play to their full potential today. We played at about 60 per cent of what I felt we should have.

"We played well for 35 overs in both innings. We lost our focus again when the pressure was on.

"It's something the players have to work out. We can talk about it all we want but when you're in that situation you have to keep your nerves, you have to stay in control."

The coach was particularly disappointed that America were able to post such a competitive score.

"Today was an opportunity missed. They've got some very good players at the top of the order but we had them out. We had them at 120 for 5 and they should have been looking at a score of around 210 maximum.

"But this guy Marshall came on and belted the ball around and we panicked. 130 runs in 15 overs tells the story.

"It happened with the batting as well. We got a good start and then we lost a few wickets and we panicked."

Logie singled out Lionel Cann, who scored 101 and 78 in his last two innings, as a batsman who had matured and was hitting form.

He said the point where Cann came off injured on 60 not out was the 'turning point' of the run chase.

"That was crucial, definitely. But I still felt we had wickets in hand and Lionel to come back. We could have done it."

Logie admitted it would be a stiff task for Bermuda to win the tournament now with the U.S. so far ahead on run rate.

"If we beat Canada and Canada beat the U.S. then we could still win but run-rate comes into it and we'll have a lot of catching up to do.

"Winning those final two games has to be our focus. Even if we don't end up winning the tournament, if we all end up on the same points then that's something."[[In-content Ad]]
