Lopes, Moniz take second in Jamaica jumping show
The event took place in Jamaica with Lopes replacing Jaeda Smith.
Lopes and Moniz rode four extremely slick rounds on Day one of the competition.
Lopes posted a double clear with Moniz having an unlucky rail resulting in four faults for the team.
Day one's results had the Bermuda team leading into Day two with full support from the Barbados team who were not competing, but were leading in cumulative points for the year.
If Bermuda won the Jamaica competition, Barbados would win overall for 2009 with Jamaica placing second. So the pressure was on to beat Jamaica!
Day two often times marks the demise of some of the teams with the horses showing signs of fatigue from Day one of the competition.
It would seem that Lady Luck is never on Bermuda's side!
Jamaica put the pressure on in Day two when their 16 & Under rider, Briana Schwapp went clear on her horse who had eliminated the Cayman and Trinidad riders the day before.
This left Moniz to ride Schwapp's horse in round four, the most crucial round of the day.
Lopes had two unfortunate rails in rounds three and four which resulted in a tally of 20 faults for Bermuda until Moniz took the reins.
Moniz too took a rail in the third round and had an unfortunate refusal with Schwapp's horse who was determined not to turn right to the intended obstacle.
Although some unfortunate rails on Day 2, the Bermuda team finished the weekend in second place to Jamaica, who were the overall winners for the 2009 CEA Junior Jumping Competition.
Coach Michael Rodrigues had this to say: "Both riders rode extremely well and we were just unlucky on the second day."
Bermuda finished fourth of the five nations in the overall competition.,
The 2010 Competition will kick off in Barbados on February 27 and 28. The Bermuda leg of the competition will be held on May 8 and 9 and will play host to Barbados, Cayman, and Jamaica.
Keisha Smith is the public relations officer for the Bermuda Equestrian Federation.[[In-content Ad]]
