Want to get lei’d this Cup Match? Then hit the Bermuda Police Rugby Club’s Cheeky Tiki Liki Luau party.
The Hawaiian bash will boast a traditional barbecue and games — including limbo — and prizes for the best costumes.
The Club’s men’s and women’s team will lead the way in grass skirts, coconut bikinis and traditional leis — floral garlands hung around the neck.
The bash will be held in the grounds of the Police Recreation Club at Prospect on July 28 from 7pm.
A cash bar will be available with special drink promotions and tickets cost just $20.
The party replaces the club’s popular annual Cup Match toga party.
Everyone is welcome to attend and get their Cup Match celebrations off to a tropical start.
The luau is a fundraiser to help the squads buy kit and equipment for the forthcoming season, which kicks off in September.
Money raised will also go towards paying for the annual tours and the general running of the club.
Women’s captain Kerry Heigham said: “The Police club has both a great rugby and socialising tradition and our luau party will be the best way to start any Cup Match festivities.”
Both the men’s and women’s teams are appealing for new recruits to join the club, which is currently celebrating its 50th anniversary.
Rookies and veteran players are welcome to join the men’s contact team and women’s touch squad.
Men’s team vice captain Lambert Schreuder said: “Join Police Rugby and become part of a 50-year tradition in which friends are made with sweat and blood.
“You don’t have to be in the police service to join and we welcome experienced and new players to the game. Everyone gets to play.”
Unlike the boys, the girls do not play the full contact game — their version is based on the real thing but is non-impact, so there is no need to worry about breaking any bones in a tackle or being crushed in a scrum.
Ms Heigham said: “We are currently looking for new recruits for the ladies team — it’s a great way to meet new people and get fit over the winter months. If you are interested in playing touch rugby then get in touch.”
The club prides itself on being a great way to make friends as well as get fit and enjoy a team sport.
There are regular social gatherings such as barbeques, club dinners and after-game parties, as well as regular training sessions and games.
It’s ideal for fans of the game, those keen to get exercise or try a new sport and people keen to broaden their social circle.
You do not need to have played either contact or touch rugby before and all team members will be happy to show you the ropes and learn the simple rules. n
