Charismatic Dwayne 'Sluggo' Leverock and spritely Flora Duffy carried off Bermuda's Athletes of the Year Awards last night at the Fairmont Southampton.

Sluggo earned world acclaim in 2007 when he dismissed England's Kevin Pierterson and Paul Collingwood in a Cricket World Cup warm-up match.

His face was emblazoned across the backs of newspapers all across England for his feat.

His catch in the slips off a first ball delivery of Malachi Jones has been replayed across the globe and many commentators made it one of the top 10 catches of the tournament.

Against Kenya, Leverock bowled 10 overs for three wickets and 28 runs. He is constantly ranked in the ICC's top 100 bowlers in One Day Internationals and was one of 18 nominees fore the Associates ODI Player of the Year Award.

Duffy is a back-to-back winner of the Female Athlete of the Year Award.

The triathlete won the CAC Championships in the Dominican Republic and was fifth in the BG Triathlon World Cup race in Lisbon in May. One week later she finished seventh in the les Sables d'Olonnes GP Sprint race in France.

Duffy also represented Bermuda in the Pan Am Games where she finished 12. The teenager helped her French professional team Poissy win the national championship.

She finished the year ranked 52nd in the world.

Winning achievement awards, and just missing out on Athlete of the year were Rodney Trott, Teresa Perozzi, Khano Smith, Patrick Nisbett and Kiera Aitken.

Perozzi is the NABC middleweight champion. Aitken, the 2004 Female Athlete of the Year, represented Bermuda at the World Swimming Championships and the Pan Am Games.

Trott captained the Under-19 team to the Americas title and to the Cricket World Cup. Khano Smith was a starter with the New England Revolution and had two goals last season. Equestrian Nisbett competed in the Pan Am Games and qualified Bermuda to compete in the Olympics.[[In-content Ad]]
