Kyme, Stout to face off in semis

All eyes at the Devonshire Squash Courts will be on one particular match during tonight's Men's Open semi-finals of the Fast Forward Freight National Squash Championships 2007, when Bermuda's top two homegrown players square off for one of the most important clashes of their careers.

Nick Kyme and James Stout face off in a semi-final clash which could go a long way to deciding which of the pair gets a wildcard entry into the sport's World Championships, to be held in Bermuda later this year.

Club spokesman Roger Sherratt said: "This year's National Championships are proving to be one of the closest fought for many years, particularly in the Men's Open Division where we have three former World ranked players all vying to be crowned champion.

"Nick Kyme is the top seed and will be looking to avenge his surprise loss in last year's final against former pro and Bermuda National Development Coach Patrick Foster. "

Foster has had an easy route so far and is expected to cruise through his semi-final encounter with Chase Toogood.

But the semi-final clash between Kyme and Stout promises to be a real thriller.

"Both players are aware that this is a huge match because Bermuda will have a wild card for one local player in the PSA World Squash Championships. Winning this match should go a long way towards deciding who will be awarded the wild card," said Sherratt.

Stout flew in earlier this week from New York where he's a professional coach at the prestigious New York Racquets Club. He was required to play two matches in one night in order to reach the semi-finals and he did so without dropping a game.

"Watch out for fireworks this evening," added Sherratt.

In the Ladies Open the clear favourite is National Team Coach, Denise Sommers, former World No. 24 from Holland. Sommers is looking fit and strong in the tournament which is not good news for either Denise Kyme or Liz Martin who usually compete against each other in the Ladies Open Final.

Sommers and Kyme were expected to progress to face each other in tonight's semi-final, while Martin was expected to come through her quarter-final last night to meet Canadian newcomer, Leah Bishop.

Bishop beat her in the Shell Divisional Handicap last September. Their last encounter was a close one and this is expected to be an exciting hard fought match.[[In-content Ad]]
