Kyme: I want out of this rut

Beaten Bermuda squash pro Nick Kyme reflected on his poor run of form this season and admitted — “It's driving me nuts”.

Kyme, number 74 in the world, lost his national title to Patrick Foster on Saturday. And, despite a niggling back injury, he admits his form is far from where he would like it to be ahead of the PSA Bermuda Masters in April.

Kyme has been drawn against world number one and some-time Bermuda resident David Palmer in the opening round of the tournament, which features the top 31 players in the world.

As the only Bermudian professional Kyme makes up the draw as a wildcard entry.

He’ll warm up for the tournament by competing for Bermuda in the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in March.

“I haven't played well since September,” he admitted.

“It’s a little bit in the head as well. You get little niggly things that stop you from going over the edge.

“Right now I’m training hard for the Commonwealth Games which will be a good warm-up tournament.

“I don’t expect to win it. I hope to get through the first couple of rounds and then I'll come up against someone in the top 20.

“To be honest, I really just want to get out of this rut.”

He said the Commonwealth Games would be a strong field, featuring five or six of the top ten players in the world.

But the Bermuda Masters would be as tough a tournament as you could find anywhere in the world.

Of his first round encounter with Palmer, Kyme said he was glad to be playing someone he knew and who he had trained with in the past.

“He is more likely to let me rally a bit more. At least I know I won't get blown off the court in ten minutes.”

Despite the fact that Palmer lives in Bermuda he and Kyme have never met in a competitive match before.

“I've played him in practice and he always takes time out to talk to me and try and help me. I'm more able to rally with him than someone like John Power.”

But before he turns his mind to April and the PSA Masters he knows he must turn around the bad run of form that culminated in his defeat to Foster on Saturday evening.

“I had a bit of a back problem but I did really want to win. It would have helped my ranking points if I'd won. Patrick played well and I didn’t.”[[In-content Ad]]
