TUESDAY, DEC. 12: Today, at Allen Temple A.M.E. Church, Senator the Hon. Kim Wilson, Attorney General & Minister of Justice, was formally announced as the Progressive Labour Party candidate for Constituency 34. Senator Wilson will be vying for the seat which will be vacated by MP Walter Lister upon the dissolution of Parliament.

Senator Wilson, having attained a Bachelor’s in Psychology from the University of Illinois, a Master’s in Education from Indiana University, and a LLB from London University in the United Kingdom, was admitted to the local bar in 1995.

Her legal background includes Criminal and Civil Litigation, Estates Planning, Wills and Probate. The issue of crime, the contributing factors and the impact on our community, has stood in the forefront of her career. She understands the challenges faced by the judicial system having served on the one hand as Defense Counsel and on the other hand as an Acting Magistrate in the lower courts. Having provided legal advice on landlord and tenant matters to the Bermuda Housing Corporation for over 10 years, Senator Wilson has a great deal of experience with landlord tenant affairs and has taken a keen interest in the issue of affordable housing. Her interests also extend to research and consideration of local constitutional matters.

Senator Wilson has served on a number of Government boards and committees such as the Human Rights Commission, E-commerce Advisory Board, Criminal Injuries Compensation Board and the Board of Governors for CedarBridge Academy. She is a member of the Allen Temple A.M.E. Church and has been active in fund raising for their capital projects and as a Sunday school teacher.

In October 2006, Senator Wilson was appointed as a Government Senator in the Upper House and was additionally appointed as Junior Minister of Finance and Education.

From 2007 until 2010, Senator Wilson served as the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice. In November 2010, Senator Wilson was appointed as the Government Senate Leader and Minister of Economy Trade & Industry. In this role she was challenged to deal with the economic downturn and its impact on jobs in Bermuda.

In November 2011, Senator Wilson returned to the position of Attorney-General and Minister of Justice.

Senator Wilson believes strongly in community service. Having served in various Parliamentary capacities has allowed her to touch the lives of so many Bermudians.

As a wife, mother and activist, she knows well the challenges that our community is facing. If entrusted to be the Member of Parliament for Sandy’s South Central, she will ensure that we provide our children with the right kinds of support, by establishing partnerships with community churches and area schools to create tutoring, mentoring, soft skills and home work programmes for our area youth.

Senator Wilson is married to Dr. Kent Simmons. They reside in Sandy’s Parish and have 2 children, Niara aged 10 and Kent II aged 7. As a retreat from her active life she enjoys spending time with her family, gardening, cooking, fishing and boating.

The Progressive Labour Party is proud to field Senator the Hon. Kim Wilson as the candidate for Constituency 34, Sandy’s South Central. We are confident that she will retain this seat for the Party and be a strong advocate for her constituents in the House of Assembly.
