Khano's big pitch

Khano Smith’s intentional “hand ball” last Thursday was nothing to get alarmed about.

The New England Revolution star was picked to throw out the first pitch on Bermuda Night at Fenway Park before the Boston Red Sox took on the Arizona Diamondbacks last Thursday.

Although Smith is more accustomed to kicking a ball with his foot, he did more than okay on his pitch to the plate.

Smith said: “I was honored to throw out the first pitch. It is such a important place (Fenway Park) in the history of baseball. It is something that I will not forget.”

Boston is a sports mad town where people are fanatical about their teams. After playing so many years with the Revolution, Smith has increased his devotion to the Red Sox, Celtics, Patriot and Bruins.

“I would say being in New England so long that I am a fan of all Boston sports teams now. I also went to school in New England for 5 years. My favourite Red Sox player would have to be David Ortiz aka Big Papi.”

Not many of us will be the centre of attention with over 30,000 sets of eyes gazing down to watch what we do, but even though he was nervous, Smith handled it with verve.

“The feeling of standing on the mound was so nerve wrecking. It’s like give a speech or taking a placekick in football. I have a new respect for pitchers having to do that 100 times in a game.

“My idea with my pitch was not to throw it as hard as I could or try to copy a pitcher. I just wanted to get it over the plate. I succeeded with that and threw a strike — the ball girl who caught it can confirm it!”

He added: “The Atmosphere at Bermuda Night at Fenway was great. The Gombeys were awesome and Twanee sang beautifully. It was a successful night for Bermuda I am sure we gained some new visitor after that night.”
