SATURDAY, JUNE 23: The men of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity won the second annual Bascome/Lowe Football Classic for the second year in a row.

The men in red beat the men of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity 2-0 thanks to goals from Troy Harvey and Jay Donowa last night.

And St David’s County Cricket Club youth programme won $1,000 in the prize draw.

After the game, Graham Robinson of the Kappas said: “It was a great game.

“Both teams played hard but we did it again.

“We played hard from the beginning to the end.”

He continued: “We won last year so I know we have some supporters.

“It’s not about the quality, it’s about the quality of people.

During the prize presentation, Craig Tyrell of the Kappas said: “On behalf of the Kappas and the Alphas, we want to thank everyone for coming out and supporting the event.

“This event is in its second year and I want to thank Dwayne Caines for sitting with me one night and talking a lot of smack to put this game on.

“It was actually supposed to be a backyard kick and it’s evolved to this.”

Mr Tyrell explained the event was named after former Health Minister Nelson Bascome, a Kappa, and Reverend Dr Wilbur Lowe, an Alpha.

Both men died in 2009.

Dr Lowe’s wife Hope and two of his children, Charisa and Jason, an Alpha, were present at the event along with Mr Bascome’s wife, Shirlene.

Mrs Lowe said: “I am so happy that you chose to do what you did.

“I found out by way of the newspaper because my son forgot to tell me.”

Mrs Bascome added: “Thank you very much for selecting these very fine gentlemen for this charity cup.

“I would like to say at this time, they did a lot of work for the community themselves.

“They are up there smiling down.”

Dr Burt McPhee, president of the Alphas, presented the shield to the Kappas' football captain, Nigel Burgess.
