Job seekers attend hospitality career fair
FRIDAY, JANUARY 11: More Bermudians working in the hospitality industry would mean less work permits to review in that sector, according to Home Affairs Minister Michael Fahy.
Mr Fahy attended the Bermuda Hotel Association’s annual job fair today at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess.
The event featured vendors form hotels across the island including both Fairmonts, Grotto Bay, Rosewood Tucker’s Point and more.
Mr Fahy said the vendors were claiming the number of people attending the job fair were up from last year.
“But more importantly, the people that are coming in are very well prepared — They’re coming in with their documents.
“Of course, the question is do you want to be in a position where you have so many people looking for work.”
“We think this is a very good opportunity as it shows how many Bermudians are interested in hospitality.
“It’s also sad that this many Bermudians are looking for work.”
Mr Fahy said the government would do whatever it can to help Bermudians get back to work.
“I spoke to a number of applicants. They’re really happy that there is a job fair.”
He said the vendors are making the most of the process with one holding on-the-spot mini interviews.
“I would expect to see a number of Bermudians employed as a result of this.
“Hopefully, that will mean there won’t be as many work permit applications to review in this industry.”
Mr Fahy said it is vital in the hospitality industry that Bermuda is showcased by Bermudians.
“If Bermudians are unwilling to do the job, then it’s a different story.
“Based on what I have seen today, that just simple can’t be the case.
“People are willing to do the work.”
