It's an all-Bermuda tennis final
FRIDAY, JULY 1: It’s going to be the Battle of Bermuda today in the men’s doubles final.
Both Bermuda teams won their semi-final matches.
Naim Azhar and David Thomas won their match 7-6 (3), and 6-1 yesterday while Gavin Manders and Jenson Bascome had a slightly easier time with a 6-0, 6-1 victory.
Azhar said he had a “sense of pride” Thomas and him “have come this far in the draw as an unseeded” team.
He said there was “no pressure” in the final but as Bermuda has won both the gold and silver.
“This will be just like every other match. It’s time to put what we have learned to the test.
“If Dave and I can do that I am confident we will come out on top.”
Manders said: “It makes me proud to be apart of the Bermuda tennis family.
“We have worked extremely hard and it feels amazing to have both teams playing in the final.
“Jenson and I look forward to the challenge.
“There is no extra pressure as we are experienced and ready for the battle.”
Manders also won his singles semi-final match 6-1, 6-1 and has secured at least a silver in today’s men’s final.
“I am feeling my blows as I have played 11 matches in five days and still have two tomorrow.
“But I have worked extremely hard on my fitness and will be ready to go to war tomorrow.
“I promise to all our fans in Bermuda I will leave it all on the court tomorrow and do my best to bring home two golds for Bermy and all the people who believe in us.”
Tyler Smith’s run in the women’s singles came to an end in the semi-final with a 6-1, 6-0 loss.
She has won a bronze medal but it will not be officially counted until Friday.
