WEDNESDAY, NOV. 16: BELCO executive Vince Ingham is hoping to deliver a shock in Pembroke West.

The new senator was today adopted as the PLP candidate for the seat held by former UBP and BDA MP Shawn Crockwell, now a member of the OBA.

Mr Ingham said: “It’s the voters of the constituency who will determine my fate and I hope, once I have the opportunity to meet with the constituents, they will see my strengths.

“I’m a keen listener and – as I understand some of the challenges facing the constituency – I will be able to advance solutions to some of these challenges.”

Mr Ingham, appointed to Senate earlier this month, is a highly-qualified engineer and president and CEO of the Ascendant Group, which includes BELCO.

He has also served on the Board of Education and Tourism Board.

He is due to retire from BELCO next March and said he had been looking forward to retirement when he was asked to serve in Senate, then to become a candidate.

Mr Ingham said: “I believe that the PLP is still best positioned to represent the interests of the people of Bermuda and I’ve had the opportunity of working with the party, serving on the education and tourism boards.

“I’ve been impressed by the party’s commitment and interest in looking for different ways to address the challenges of Bermuda going forward.”

Premier Paula Cox said: “He is an engineer and, talking to him, engineers are problem-solvers. I’m glad he had decided to apply his skills for the Progressive Labour Party.”

Ms Cox added that Pembroke West traditionally voted for Opposition parties – but said the PLP was offering “compelling” reasons to vote for the party.

She said: “Voters will see we have an excellent mix and an excellent blend of youth and experience.

“Despite the challenges, Bermuda’s future is bright and the PLP will continue to connect with the people on the doorstep.”
