Ingham hangs on to win karting title over Barbosa

WEDNESDAY, MAY 2: Five karting champions were crowned on the last day of the season at Southside Raceway.

But just as importantly, the Bermuda Karting Association is poised to have another year of growth, building upon the high number of junior drivers who took part in the 2011-12 season.

Jason ‘Skuzzy’ North, BKA president, said: “We’re already looking forward to our 2012/2013 season and continuing with the great momentum of growth that we have been experiencing of recent.

“I can only see more positive things coming from our growing popularity, most importantly with the continued development of our junior programme.”

David Barbosa won Sunday’s Senior TAG Class race with Luis Martins in second and Stephen Corrado in third.

But it was fourth place Patrick Ingham who took the overall title. Ingham survived a last season push by Barbosa and won the TAG crown by 41 points. Martins was third overall in a class which saw 13 drivers compete over the course of the season.

Barbosa also won Sunday’s 125cc shifter Class with Devon Durrant in second and Jason Simons in third. Stephen Corrado finished ahead of Alexander Roque for fourth, but Roque was the overall class winner.

Roque had 687 points, which was 57 more than Barbosa. Ben Savill was third overall while Durrant was fourth.

A total of 10 drivers competed in the shifters.

Owen DeCosta was victorious in Sunday’s Junior Clone Class for 7 to 12 year olds. DeCosta finished ahead of Blake Horseman and Ryan Burgess. Amon Cannonier, Zavier Smith and Gianni DeSilva were fourth through sixth respectively.

Ryan Lopes was easily the overall class winner as he handily beat back the challenge from nine competitors. Lopes victory margin was an astounding 154 points.

DeCosta was second overall with Horseman third.

If the Junior Clone Class for 7 to 12 year olds had the widest margin of victory, then the one for 12 to 15 year olds had the smallest margin of triumph.

Amber Lopes edged past Al Seymour Jr by just 22 points. Jehan Durrant was third overall with Jahnazae Swan fourth.

In Sunday’s racing, Swan brought down the chequered flag for the older Junior Clone Class with Durrant second.

Neither Andrew Cabral nor Robert DeCosta raced in the Senior Clone Class on Sunday. Cabral took the overall title by 60 points over DeCosta.

Go kart racing is expected to start its next season in September.
