'If you're not dedicated, you're not wanted'
By Colin Thompson
The senior national cricket programme is off limits to those unwilling to dedicate themselves to Bermuda’s 2015 ICC World Cup qualifying bid.
This was the stern warning issued by BCB development director Arnold Manders on the eve of the Americas Regional Division One Championship that gets underway on local soil on Friday.
He said: “We want people that are fully committed to the cause of trying to get Bermuda back to the World Cup. And if you are not committed then don’t waste my time, David’s (Moore) time and Bermuda’s time.
“You have to want to represent your country bad enough to make a commitment, and neither the Board, David (Moore) or myself will be going out begging players. If you’re not willing to make the commitment then you can stay and play club cricket.”
Bermuda will take the first steps on a journey they hope will culminate with 2015 ICC World Cup qualification when they face Bahamas in their opening Americas Championship round robin match at the National Sports Centre on Friday.
The island’s squad has undergone yet another facelift from the one that toured South Africa and Namibia earlier this year.
All-rounder Joshua Gilbert, batsman Chris Douglas and medium pacer Kevin Tucker have made the squad due to their dedication. Gilbert and Tucker “are two shining examples who have committed to the cause,” added Manders. “Most of the players that are representing Bermuda right now are the ones that have bothered to train three or four nights per week and do all the fitness, tactical and technical work that is required.” n
