If Brown is to succeed, he needs to join up the dots

Now that Dr Ewart Brown is Premier, I hope that Bermuda will try harder to succeed in achieving 'joined-up government'.

What's 'joined-up government'?

It's recognizing - right across all government ministries - that a visible fact is always connected to an underlying cause or reason. After years in the medical field, the 'Doc' will know that as a certainty. For instance, he'll know that:

n IF Bermuda does not effectively educate enough young Bermudians...

THEN not enough young Bermudians will be employable in a job-market that demands high skill levels.

n IF Bermuda's job-market still has to have more and more workers...

THEN Bermuda's job-market will import workers or it will shrivel, shrink, and die.

n IF Bermuda's job-market lives, thrives, and grows, it will import workers...

THEN these imported workers will have to live in Bermuda.

n IF these imported workers live in Bermuda, there will be intensified competition as employed foreign workers compete with unemployed and un-employable Bermudians...

THEN some lower-income and unemployed Bermudians may be displaced from their housing, or may not be able to pay higher open market rents.

n IF Bermudians are un-housed or displaced in Bermuda, or are made to feel that they are being economically disadvantaged or shoved aside...

THEN they are likely to feel frustrated and alienated and are likely to get angry.

n IF too many Bermudians get to feel frustrated and alienated and angry at their ambient situations, their anger is likely to be acted out...

THEN there will be noticeable national social impacts and effects.

n IF these national social impacts and effects are significant and negative...

THEN there will be higher and noticeable and undesirable levels of social tension in the whole nation.

n IF….heck, he's a Doctor - he can figure out the rest.

I believe - strongly believe - that there's a need to 'join up' on Education, Immigration, Housing, Finance, and matters of Law and Good Order. I'm watching - and waiting for results.
