FRIDAY, JUNE 24: A new lifeguard tower is being erected at John Smith’s Bay.
The old one was washed away into the Atlantic Ocean by Hurricane Igor last September.
Construction work started at the beginning of June and the project should be finished within the next couple of weeks.
Umbrellas
Nathan Trott, Lifeguard Superintendent, told the Bermuda Sun his lifeguards had been using raised chairs with umbrellas since last year to keep an eye on swimmers.
“We’ll all be really pleased to see the new tower finished,” he said.
“It has been quite a while since we had a lifeguard tower to work from at John Smith’s.
“It is great to see it going up, and once it is in operation it will be a valuable asset to the lifeguards.
“The tower is important to the lifeguards but is also important to the overall safety of John Smith’s Bay.”
Two lifeguards patrol the beach during the summer season.
