Heroes Day: Just a political ploy
I find it rather odd that the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Michael Dunkley could not show respect for Dame Lois Browne-Evans to postpone his trip to attend her funeral yet now he wants Bermuda to name the Courts in her honour.
I find it odd that the UBP expressed disagreement with the airport being named after Mr. Frederick Wade, yet now it is calling for a National Heroes Day to honour all those who have made a positive and lasting impact on Bermuda and Bermudians and to name certain landmarks after some of these persons.
I find it odd that the UBP is calling for a National Heroes Day when many of its supporters were so vocally upset that the day of Dame Lois funeral was declared a national holiday.
I find it odd that the UBP now state that our students should learn about these persons during their school years yet the UBP never implemented Bermuda's history being taught in our schools.
I find it strange that Mr. Dunkley is now calling for this recognition of these persons when he publicly states he knows nothing about the racist history of his own party.
Let's face it, the fact of the matter is that most of the people history shows made the most significant impact on Bermuda and the lives of its people are people the UBP attempted to discredit.
As a prime example, while his daughters may be members of the UBP today, the UBP was never fond of Dr. E. F. Gordon nor did it embrace his ideals. As far as I am aware for most Bermudians Dr. Gordon is considered a national hero.
I think the UBP needs to sit back and realize that it is shooting itself in the foot by making this call for a National Heroes Day because most of Bermuda's heroes were strong supporters of the PLP. Just who would the UBP put forward, from a political perspective, as a hero from within its ranks? Maybe E. T. Richards? Surely they wouldn't dare put forward Sir Henry Tucker?
Mr. Dunkley states that the heroes could "...include politicians, government leaders, athletes or those who have made a positive difference in people's lives through charitable work, business and the church" yet he only mentions Dame Lois, the political figure. For as many times as he mentions Dame Lois' name in the article one could easily make the mistake that Mr. Dunkley is running for the PLP in the upcoming election.
It really is amazing the lengths to which a political party that is so desperate to win an election will go in its efforts to win. Clearly this calling for a National Heroes Day is nothing more than politics at work.
To Michael Dunkley and his party colleagues: "You had 30-years to provide government for the people and you did not do it."
