WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 14: Mark Hatherley of Team Winner’s Edge rode to his second win of the season to win the IBC points series at Sunday’s Victoria Park Criterium, holding off a charging Ian Port of Team Fast Forward Bicycle Works at the finish.
Shannon Lawrence of Team Focus finished third.
Last week’s road race winner, Brian Drea of Team Madison, hoping to secure the five-race IBC series, attacked hard from the gun but then crashed on the first lap.
After the race regrouped Drea’s teammate Greg Reid led the attacks to dislodge the field.
The attacks continued from Team Winner’s Edge’s Darren ‘Shakee’ Glasford and Hatherley, but the many corners of the course, which took in a loop around Victoria Park that extended past IBC on Park Road with a long drag along Dundonald Street and the constant braking and accelerations in and out of the corners, made any move to get away difficult.
With four laps remaining ‘Skakee’ flatted and was out, and the Winner’s Edge plan of setting him up for a victory faded.
However, teammate Hatherley took the lead heading into the final corner of the last lap and held his advantage to the line, taking enough of a lead over Drea to secure the series.
Winner’s Edge rider Karen Bordage, the top woman in the race, was 11th.
Hatherley, Glasford, Lawrence and Adam Harbutt, consistently the best eligible cyclists this season, leave this weekend for the Caribbean Cycling Championships in Jamaica.
In the B race Junior Alex Godfrey of team Fast Forward Bicycle Works rode to his second victory of the season besting Crime Stoppers’ Anthony Bartley and Ricky Smith (Sr) in a race of attrition that saw no major breakaways.
Godfrey’s teammate Norbet Meyer topped the points at the end of the IBC series.
In the C race McKeon Stevens of team Crime Stoppers beat Winner’s Edge Rider Paulo Medeiros to the line to take his first win of the season. Dnarte Lima was third. Nigel Godfrey of Team Tokio topped the series standings.
In the Junior A race Rico Smith of Winner’s Edge besting Daniel Oatley of Fast Forward Bicycle Works and Gabriella Arnold of Winner’s Edge.
The three rounded out the IBC series in the same order.
In the Junior B race Zion Dowling of Team Focus was first, Alex Pilgrim of Fast Forward Bicycle Works was second and Kaz Godfrey of Team Focus Third. Nicholas Pilgrim, Malik Joell and Jeremiah Samuels were the top three in the Junior C race.
The IBC Bermuda National Criterium Championships will be held in Hamilton on October 9, and will also include races for peewee riders so long as they have a bike and a helmet. For more information visit www.bermudabicycle.org.
