The World Cup is next month and it brings back memories from four years ago when we competed in it.
I can recall us getting ready to go off to the World Cup in 2007 in St. Vincent for our warm-up games against England and Zimbabwe.
It’s amazing how four years have gone by so fast.
I watch these teams and I know Bermuda is better now than it was four years ago.
It makes me want to have a knock at it.
Meeting Sachin (Tendulkar) was the highlight for me from then. I got to have a bowl at my idol.
We would go to functions, cocktail receptions and he would be there. Just sharing the same room with him was an honour.
I got to talk with him about how he prepares for matches.
He is such a gentleman off the field as well — so humble.
He is the greatest cricketer ever and I will always cherish those memories.
Just being in presence and picking his brain will forever be an honour.
I have to pick my boys India to win it all.
They’re at home and they’re playing well. How can you pick against them?
They believe they can beat any team in the world and you really can’t doubt them right now.
Many people want India to win so Sachin can retire or he’ll be back out there again in four year’s time for the next World Cup.
If India doesn’t win it, no one can ever count out Australia.
They’ve won the last three World Cups and they know what it takes to get the job done.
They’ve been playing the worst cricket they’ve been playing for years, you just can’t count them out.
England also has a shot with Sri Lanka having an outside chance.
The West Indies might do well, but they’ll be way too patchy in the subcontinent to go all the way. If it were in Australia or somewhere else where it is livelier, then they would have a better chance.
They’ve have glimpses of greatness and can pull off an upset here and there, but they won’t go all the way.
Ireland has the best chance from among the minnows of pulling an upset.
They have 11 guys who are professional, who play county cricket. They’ve come together as a team.
There will be one or two upsets just because they are playing in the subcontinent where it is a little slow and that will even out the odds some.
There’s been some talk about the reduced number of teams in this World Cup from 16 to 14, but it should be broadened.
If you are trying to attract more world attention and get people excited about the sport, it should be bigger.
Everyone plays cricket to reach that level so it should be growing.
We had a very strong Under-19 selected this week.
There is some great talent on that squad.
I know a lot of the Under-19 players through the all-star matches for the first time. They’ve been groomed by David Moore and Clevie Wade.
They have a very good chance to win the Americas Under-19 Tournament as there are some very good players on that squad.
There are a lot of young players who have played senior cricket and young Joshua Gilbert is a fine choice as captain.
He has a nice level head. I call him Mr. Cricket because he loves the sport so much.
The squad has a good leader in him.
I’m looking for some very big things from them. Obviously they’ll be up against it with Canada.
They have so many more guys to pick from, plus so many are from Sri Lanka or Pakistan. That’s all who you see play for them.
Even with that, our boys stand a good chance of qualifying.
