Hammering hairdresser to take on Richardson

The re-match between construction worker Leo 'Lionheart' Richardson and hairdresser Joshua Smith tops a strong under-card for next week's world title fight.

Smith, who has been sparring with NABC World Middleweight Champion Teresa Perozzi in the run up to her title defence, is out for revenge.

Richardson inflicted one of only two defeats the young English boxer has suffered in his six-fight career.

The pair are among the best amateur fighters in the country.

Richardson, who trains at Chucky Renaud's Controversy Gym, destroyed Denver cop Ron Thomas in his last bout at the police boxing night.

It was supposed to be an exhibition bout but Thomas came out swinging and ended up on the wrong-end of a severe beating.

In spite of that display, which won him 'performance of the night' and his impressive 6-1 record, Richardson is taking nothing for granted.

“I don't go into any fight saying I am going to beat the guy. If he's better than me on the night then he'll get the best of me, if he's not, then I'll get the best of him.”

Richardson, who rates himself and Smith as two of the top-five fighters in Bermuda, said he was ready and prepared for as many as eight rounds and would have liked to have gone further than the scheduled three.

Smith is one of the few fighters actually in Richardson's 195-200lb range.

But that hasn't stopped the 35-year-old from taking on all comers, including heavyweights like Sharrieff Wales, who he has beaten twice.

“I just train and if I get a fight, I get a fight,” said Richardson who also plays for Devonshire Cougars' commercial soccer team.

“I'm not going to over-train for fights. I just do my work-outs, keep my weight down and do what I have to do to win.”

He said he would be looking to be patient against Smith, who is a few inches taller, and pick his moments to strike.

“I've got to make him stretch and make him work,” he added.

He said he was normally quite a patient contained fighter but had been drawn into a more destructive performance by his opponent at the police event.

“I had to make a point because he tried to hurt me. It was supposed to be an exhibition fight but I would have ended up hitting the canvas.”

The referee ended up stopping the fight, ruling that his opponent Thomas could take no more punishment. But that's not the way Richardson says he likes to win.

“I like to get there and fight enough to win. I ain't got to split nobody's face open,”

Other action includes Jerome Caines, the current fight night Middleweight Champion taking on Lyndon Woods, Motocross expert Otis Ingham against Tafari Maxwell and Andre Bean against Aaron Hassell.

Perozzi’z gloves

There will also be a chance to win Teresa's autographed boxing gloves from the championship bout, which will be raffled on the night.[[In-content Ad]]
