Government's cash windfall for seniors' housing repairs
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 28: An $86,0000 cash injection to help upgrade a charity’s stock of housing for seniors was today announced by Public Works Minister Michael Weeks.
Mr Weeks said the money would be used to upgrade the five groups of properties owned by the Bermuda Housing Trust.
He added: “These repairs will range from painting, window and door repairing to plumbing, for example.
“In doing so, we wish to ensure that seniors can benefit from improved living standards and continue to live independently through the provision of enhanced and safe accommodations.”
Mr Weeks explained his Ministry stepped in because the Trust – which relies heavily on fundraising events and donations – was struggling in the current economic climate and with increased competition for a shrinking pool of available funds.
He said: "Recognising that the Bermuda Housing Trust faced financial challenges in meeting its commitments, the Ministry of Public Works has supported the Bermuda Housing Trust in their efforts to ensure that the housing needs of seniors.
“We believe this assistance is in keeping with the Government’s commitment to assist those most vulnerable in society but also a reflection of our values as a community that recognizes the important contribution that seniors have made in paving the foundation for our country.”
Mr Weeks was speaking as he announced the funding at the Purvis Rest Home in Devonshire, one of the Trust’s properties.
Premier and Finance Minister Paula Cox added: “We recognise that meeting the demands and needs of our seniors population requires partnerships from all involved and the Purvis Park seniors’ residence stands out as a good example in providing the types of services that our seniors need.”
And she told a group of Purvis Park residents: “You are the lifeblood of our community and as a Government we will continue to develop new and innovative ways to meet your needs, by working hard to preserve and improve your quality of life.”
