Golfing for tennis
Around 120 stars from various different sports, including football, tennis and cricket, as well as politicians and businessmen will join Coley at Belmont Hills Golf Course on Tuesday for a charity tournament.
It’s the second year Place, who is Bermuda tennis’ junior development officer, has organised the tournament.
Last year’s event at Port Royal raised over $8,000 to send some of the island’s most talented young tennis players to compete in world ranking tournaments overseas.
Place, who is challenging all the entrants to take him on, in a “closest to the pin” contest on the 17th hole, said the idea was to raise as much money as possible to raise the level of junior tennis. He said most young Bermudian players only got the chance to play in one major tournament a year —?the ITF Bank of Bermuda competition. But other players in the region played around 10 tournaments on the ITF Summer Circuit.
He said the circuit was for top juniors to win ranking points and develop their game with the ultimate goal of moving on to bigger international tournaments, like the junior U.S. Open.
He said: “If you’re going to go pro, you’ve got to start on this circuit.”
He added that Bermuda had plenty of talented young players but because of the island’s isolation they did not have exposure to the same level of competition as youngsters from other countries.
“Once these young players have been selected to take part in these tournaments and people have given their time and money to help them, I have to stress that they must give 110 per cent,” he said.[[In-content Ad]]
