Frozen vegetables help cause May inflation

TUESDAY, JULY 10: Frozen vegetables were one of the leading causes in the rise of inflation for May. Food prices were up 4.5 per cent helping push the Consumer Price Index up 2.9 per cent more in May 2012 than they did in May 2011.

Inflation for the year is running at 2.72 per cent.

But it wasn’t just those bag of frozen peas spiking food prices — cooking oils and condiments were up 9.7 per cent and fresh fruits were up 9.3 per cent.

The Fuel & Power sector was up and 13.4 per cent and the Health & personal Care sector was up 5.9 per cent in May over May averages.

Food prices rose just 0.5 per cent from April to May with beef tenderloins up 6.2 per cent and spare ribs up 5.3 per cent.

Feeding Fido and Kitty was also more expensive with food costing 1.6 per cent more in May than April.

The Sin sector was down 0.1 per cent as the average price of wine went down by 1.3 per cent but the cost of puffing that cigarette was up 1.5 per cent.

The Transport & Vehicle sector was 1.1 per cent more expensive mainly due to the cost of airfares rising 9.0 per cent. Gas prices were down 1.7 per cent.
