Experience is more important than winning says Logie

Bermuda coach Gus Logie yesterday shrugged off his side's Intercontinental Cup elimination and insisted there was still plenty to play for in the remainder of the competition.

Bermuda needed to gain maximum points from their two matches against Kenya and Holland, on the current tour of Africa, to stand a chance of toppling group leaders Canada.

But Kenya, who were already out after taking no points from their opening two games, picked up the six bonus points on offer for amassing a first-innings lead.

It is now mathematically impossible for Bermuda to reach the final, contested between the winners of the two groups.

But Logie said winning the competition was less important than the experience his players would gain from competing.

"It was always going to be a difficult situation having to win outright against Holland and Kenya.

"Coming to Kenya and playing the four-day game straight away with no practice match was always going to be an uphill task.

"But our motivation was not just to try and get to the final. We wanted to come here and test ourselves against teams like Kenya who are above us in the standings and above us in terms of experience.

"To play against them in their own backyard and do well will give us added confidence."

Play was set to resume in the four-day match today after rain washed out day three, leaving a draw the most likely prospect.

Bermuda were skittled for 133 on day one but fought back well through Saleem Mukuddem and Ryan Steede to restrict the Kenyans to 205 - a lead of just 72.

They were due to start this morning with Kwame Tucker and David Hemp at the wicket on 19 for 2, still 53 runs adrift.

Logie said it had been a frustrating day yesterday as hopes of a positive result all but disappeared in the rain.

"I don't think there is time to win the game now," the coach reflected.

"All we can hope is for better weather. We are looking for a much better performance with the bat. We have got three one-day games coming up and it would be good for the players to get some time in the middle."

Bermuda will fly out to Mombasa tomorrow with the one-day-series scheduled to begin in the coastal city on Saturday.
