Environmental Protection launches illegal fishing hotline
FRIDAY, JULY 8: A new fishing hotline launched today will make it easier for members of the public to report illegal fishing to wardens.
The new phone line can also be used to get advice on fishing regulations and report unusual events like large amounts of dead fish in the waterways.
Dr Fred Ming, Director of Environmental Protection, said: “Our fisheries wardens do a fine job, but we need public support with enforcement of the fisheries regulations, which can be made more effective if members of the public report any activities they witness and suspect is prohibited.”
The new hotline number is 705-FISH (3474).
Callers will be able to speak directly to fisheries wardens or marine resources staff, who can also provide answers to questions on fishing regulations.
They can order inquiries into suspected illegal activity on the water and make referrals to the Department of Public Prosecutions where sufficient evidence is available.
