WEDNESDAY, SEPT 26: PLP candidate Makai Dickerson will contest a David versus Goliath election against OBA leader Craig Cannonier in one of the safest seats in Bermuda.
Mr Dickerson will challenge Mr Cannonier in Devonshire South Central, which he won in November last year with a massive 82.89 per cent of the vote.
Mr Dickerson said: “I am aware that some would consider my candidacy in constituency 12 as a case of a lamb to a slaughterhouse.
“However, I view it as an opportunity to speak further with fellow Bermudians about all that I wish for Bermuda to become and the contributions I will make to those dreams.”
Last November, The PLP’s Anthony Richards took 75 votes (12.34 per cent) in the seat, with Independent David Sullivan taking 29 votes or 4.77 per cent of the vote.
Bur Mr Dickerson urged voters – even if they planned to vote for the OBA – to at least listen and share respective visions for the future of Bermuda.
He said: “Regardless of our sides, we must man the effort to push forward together with a common agenda.”
Mr Dickerson added: “We have many things to work on as the people of Bermuda but the work can only come when we are truly ready to work together.”
Mr Dickerson has been captain of Willow Cuts, a Gombey, the chairman of West End Youth Community Club and been a volunteer on the Mirrors programme.
He sits on Sandys Parish Council, is an executive board member of the Bermuda Youth Council and is an executive member of the Bermuda Junior Tourism Board.
He is also assistant organiser for the PLP.
A cartoon created by Mr Dickerson caused controversy in August. It portrayed three young woman candidates as pretty but dumb “window dressing".
Mr Dickerson apologised if anyone had been personally offended – but insisted the cartoon made a larger point that the OBA was just a rebranded UBP, with former UBP politicians in safe seats and new OBA candidates in marginals.
