Gavin Manders said the island’s tennis players would be ready for the competition at the CAC Games.
“This is going to be a high level competition. It’s going to be a level of Davis Cup Groups 2, 3 and 4. It’s about being able to compete on the day. We’re surely not a favourite. We weren’t supposed to win a match in Davis Cup and I came away with two.
“If guys play up to their potential and play well, anything can happen. It’s definitely going to difficult.”
Manders said they would face some of the same players they just saw in Davis Cup action.
“The advantage is we now understand the level we’re up against. The other advantage is understanding the conditions and what it feels like to play in that heat.”
He said a slight disadvantage is their competitors now know there will be no easy matches against Bermuda.
“When they played us, they found out we all could play tennis. We gained a little bit of respect when we went down there.”
Manders will be playing singles and he’s not sure if he’ll be playing doubles with one of his Davis Cup counterpart or teaming with one of the ladies for mixed doubles.
He said Na’im Azhar would probably be the other male singles player. “I haven’t talked with (coach) Steve Bean yet and I could possibly play mixed doubles because we may have a chance to do something there. n
