Cricketers retain Catlin Cup with last gasp victory
The friendly cup, staged annually between Lloyds CC and Bermuda, was won by the English club side in a final-over thriller last year in the run-up to the ICC Trophy.
This time it was Bermuda that prevailed by four runs in a similarly tight knife-edge encounter.
Needing 16 to win off the last over Lloyds fell just short. Delyone Borden was the hero with the ball taking 2 for 22 off ten overs of off-spin.
Earlier Gibbons (53), under fire after struggling in the triangular tournament in Trinidad, and OJ Pitcher (35) got Bermuda off to a cracking start, batting first on a cold and damp English morning in London.
Romaine (56), who has been Bermuda’s most consistent batsman this year, and skipper Janeiro Tucker (33) hit Bermuda into a good position before a late flurry of late wickets curtailed their progress. Bermuda finished up with 218 for 8.
Borden then worked his magic to restrict the Lloyds reply while senior spinner Dwayne Leverock also chipped in with two wickets and seamers Jim West and Saleem Mukuddem picked up one each.
Lloyds did well to take it to the last over but fell short on 214 for 9.
Yesterday’s victory, against a decent club side comparable in standard to some of the teams Bermuda faced in the ICC Trophy last year, followed a comprehensive defeat against Sussex seconds the previous day.
The team was made up of academy players and others on the fringes of the English County side’s first team.
Bermuda now flies to Guernsey for a three-game series there.[[In-content Ad]]
