Clay to go overseas for medical treatment
The talented middle-order batsman will fly to the U.S. to seek specialist help from America's top sports doctors to ensure he is fully fit for the World Cup.
He will travel to the Colorado based Steadman-Hawkins clinic which worked with soccer players like Manchester United striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy and former captain Roy Keane as well as a host of top NFL stars.
As Bermuda's best and most experienced batsman Smith is an essential part of the island's World Cup plans and it was considered crucial that any surgery and rehab work was completed well in advance of West Indies 2007.
Smith expects to make the trip to the states in the early part of next year, but he insists he will not be rushing back to action.
The 34-year-old, who is suffering from a meniscal tear in his knee — essentially damaged cartilage, said he had got back on the field too soon after previous injuries and was playing it safe this time.
Smith, who missed the bulk of the ICC Trophy with an unrelated hamstring injury, said he had seen Dr Millett. a specialist from the clinic in Bermuda last week. The doctor recommended he travel to the States for treatment.
“It's nothing specific that happened. I was just walking and it gave out. That was my indication, right there and then that I needed to get it checked.
“It's something that's just reoccurred from years of playing both sports - football and cricket.”
Bermuda cricket team physio Daniel Morgan said: “Now is the time we want to be doing it.
“We want to get it dealt with as soon as possible because there is going to be a lengthy rehabilitation.
“It's difficult to say whether he will be back at 100 per cent. Once you have an injury like that you have to wait and see.”[[In-content Ad]]
