Cayman coach says Bermuda is the team to beat

Cayman coach Theo Cuffy believes Bermuda is the team to beat at the Americas Championships.

The Trinidadian, a former teammate of Bermuda coach Gus Logie, said Irving Romaine's side would be the favourites in Florida next week.

"I honestly think Bermuda is the team. Canada have gone through some changes and Bermuda has a steady core of players that have really performed for them over the years.

"You can see the professionalism coming in under Gus. I think they are the ones to beat."

Cayman face Bermuda in the opening game of the tournament on Tuesday. And Cuffy is not confident about his side's chances.

"We've had ups and downs in our performances against the top teams. I'm certainly not going to predict that we will win, but if we can compete and learn something in defeat then that can be useful as well."

Cuffy knows his adversary Logie well. He was in the Trinidad & Tobago side that travelled to Bermuda when Logie made his debut as a 17-year-old.

Their paths have crossed many times as players and coaches and Cuffy believes his countryman is a master coach.

"Gus is doing a tremendous job. The results might not show it because Bermuda are losing a lot of matches but you have seen a transition, you've seen professionalism and Gus is responsible for that.

"Bermuda is the team that we are looking to emulate."

He said Cayman were also in a transitional phase with a new generation of young players coming through. Ramon Sealey, the 17-year-old wicket-keeper batsman who was player of the tournament at the Americas Under-19 Championships, and 20-year-old pace bowler Marlon Bryan are the best of the new generation.[[In-content Ad]]
