Carrington could get Perozzi rematch
The Bermuda Sun revealed on Friday that Perozzi had been granted permission to fight for the vacant belt - one of the most prestigious titles in women's boxing. Perozzi already holds the North American Boxing Council's belt.
And Boxu Potts, the promoter who hopes to put on the event in Bermuda next February, told us today that Carrington was the 'front-runner'.
He said he still had to get the fighter cleared with the WBA, who must sanction any boxer to compete for its belts.
But he insisted that, despite the pounding she took from Perozzi -who knocked her out in the sixth round in Port of Spain last September, Carrington is good enough.
"She's got a good record, she's still in the top ten and she felt she didn't do herself justice against Teresa the first time.
"She claimed she was not well and feels she could have done better. She feels Perozzi is a fighter and a brawler, but she thinks if she moves her feet and boxes better she can beat her. She's talked herself back into the equation.
"I'm talking to the WBA to see if they will sanction her. She would be a good opponent, but we still have to wait and see what they say."
Perozzi said she would prefer to take on someone she has never fought before, but would be happy to give Carrington another chance if that was not possible.
"I'm sure she'll come in a lot better prepared this time. I wouldn't underestimate her.
"I think she was a bit out of shape last time and she thought she was going to beat me. She's a better fighter than that, she couldn't have won all those fights and not be.
"I'd obviously prefer to fight somebody new. She had a lot of excuses last time but I didn't beat her by chance."
Potts has big plans for the event, which he hopes will also include another women's world title fight alongside the Perozzi bout at the top of the bill. He also hopes to have the fights televised across the Caribbean
He has the backing of the WBA who want to make the fight part of its international KO Drugs series.
"Let's just hope it happens," added Perozzi.[[In-content Ad]]
