That’s the message from trade minister Kim Wilson today as she urges islanders looking for work to be flexible and open-minded.
The Bermuda Hotel Association will host a hospitality careers fair next Thursday and a slew of job options will be on display.
Organizers say even those with no experience in hospitality should come out because many skills can be utilized in the industry.
Kim Wilson, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry urged participants to “dress to impress” — to enhance their chances of finding work.
“Many will argue that the hours are long and the work is hard; however, Bermudians have never been afraid of hard work — you will recall that Bermudians once dominated the hospitality industry workforce.”
The Minister added: “I encourage all Bermudians who are seeking employment to attend this jobs fair.
“Dress to impress. Bring your resumés. Be prepared to put your best foot forward. This is your opportunity to do what you need to do to get employed.
“These are indeed tough times for us all. Simply put, a low wage is better than no wage. Don’t choose not to work over working for a lower than desired salary.”
John Harvey, CEO of the Bermuda Hotel Association said: “Everyone in our membership is on board. We have this job fair in the past.
“We have many exciting job opportunities available. If you can get your foot in the door, you can move on from job to job.”
Mr. Harvey said it wasn’t unusual for landscapers to transition into restaurant managers or housekeepers or to work the sales and marketing departments.
Among the jobs to be highlighted are; room attendants, kitchen stewards, front desk agents, housemen, Maitre’Ds and more.
The fair will be held at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess Hotel on Thursday, February 17 from 10am to 2pm.
